Rug Making

The Celtic Design Collection incorporates interweaving and interlacing throughout it designs. These are the central form and axis of Celtic Art. It is a hallmark, a constant and essential thread. Interweaving has a wealth of meaning: it can represent the ‘in’ and ‘out’ of breath, the ebb and flow of the tides, the eternal warp and weft of life’s tapestry and the ceaseless flow of movement.

Interweaving is often described a a symbol of love and friendship, because the lines join and blend at countless meeting and farewell points, thought to symbolize unity.

The Celtic designs are done to scale on a graph of paper called a ‘cartoon’. Using a hand-tool the rug-maker punches strands of wool into the canvas, wrapping the pile yarn around the warp threads, while following the cartoon.

Due to the fact that the rugs are handmade the pile tends to be very uneven and scissors are used to trim the pile before it is loosened and washed. Once the rug has been washed, it is shaved evenly one more time and now you have a wonderful new piece of art and history

Each piece is tufted by hand using a yarn carefully blending 80% Wool and 20% Acrylic. The Wool makes the rugs durable, yet fire retardant, whereas the Acrylic provides a luxurious deep pile texture. Each piece weighs 95oz per sq. yd or approximately 3,200 grammes per square meter.
