Our History

Jeremiah Higgins in front of his shop in Claremorris

Higgins and Company commenced trading at Main Street, Claremorris, Country Mayo, Ireland in 1820. The original shop is still trading two centuries later. The business, which was founded by Patrick J. Higgins in 1820, was passed down to his son Thomas in the 1870’s and in turn in 1919 to his son Jeremiah Higgins, whose name remains over the door to this day. The family still operate the business and it is from this same premises that our sales office is based today.

2000 years of Celtic art and design, handed down over generations, has inspired us to create the Celtic Design Collection. The Celts chose art and design to express how they felt about the universe, life, death, and the changing seasons. Celtic symbolism reflects human spirit, their ambitions and desires, aspirations and fears, their beliefs of the “other world” and of their fellow man.

We as a people are again seeking a higher level of clarity and a deeper meaning for our journey through life. There is convergence between the values of the ancient Celts and our reawakened values today. These values motivate us daily in how we interact with family, friends, colleagues and how we achieve our personal and professional goals.

                             “I have spread my dreams under your feet;
                    Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”

We have chosen these words of William Butler Yeats to describe how we feel about our Celtic design rugs. Each design has a story reflecting our aspirations through Celtic symbolism. Once you have chosen the rug which personally appeals to you, you too will understand.

With three distinctive elements to choose from, Celtic symbolism, Celtic design and colour, the difficulty will be choosing just one. Perhaps ‘ODYSSEY‘ will appeal to you, with its array of beautiful designs; the Irish wolfhound depicting ‘LOYALTY‘; or a circle of three interweaving wolfhounds representing ‘SERENITY‘; or the simple elegance of the ‘ETERNITY‘ rug.
